Visit a craft park where you will take part in a hands-on workshop and observe the gifted artisans. Upon arriving at the Akiu Traditional Craft Park, you will join a workshop and learn how to make a kokeshi doll, which you can keep as a memento. These wooden folk-art dolls were traditionally exchanged as tokens of friendship and held messages of hope and spirituality. They have only two pieces – a torso and a head. The facial features and clothing are painted on, which is where your creativity will be showcased. Following the workshop, you can meander about the other ateliers and watch the artisans craft items such as tansu chests, textiles colored with natural dyes and tea utensils. Outside, you will enjoy a panorama of a historic hot springs that feudal lords once used. You will also view Rairaikyo Gorge, a natural wonder with precipitous boulder-lined walls and a crystal-clear stream at the bottom.
