Another early start, yet again awake before the wakeup call, we had time to grab a coffee when grabbing our packed lunch, I am missing the Nespresso machine, the coffee here needs to be tasted to understand how good a bad coffee in Australia. We got to our 4x4’s just before the gates opened up at Kruger. Our guide for the day was Elvis, there were 9 of us in each vehicle, and our first sight for the day was Impalas followed closely by Elephants, we stopped at Skukuzu for a comfort stop. Which means toilet (TMI I know) and something to eat and drink and the opportunity to help out with the local economy. Which at this stop we didn’t. After this we were fortunate to see 4 of what they call the big 5, Elephant, Lion, Buffalo and Leopard. We are yet to see the Rhino which is the fifth. Just before lunch we were taken to a loop, which is exactly as it says but with a very special destination, this was an area that a Leopard is known to be in, and we were not disappointed. We spent a while just taking pictures of the Leopard in silence, our driver had said that if anyone spoke or stood up or anything like that we would leave the area immediately, this way other groups could come through and have a very high chance that the Leopard would be there for them. We had lunch at Pretoriuskop, at a place called Wimpey’s, this place was MacDonald’s on steroids, these guys food and service was the reason why over 120 MacDonald stores in South Africa was reduced to only 12. Craig had straight out said that the plastic food in South Africa was a huge waste of time, considering the price of real food at Wimpey’s is the same price as MacDonald’s. We had an hour left in the park before we were to be back at the bus, this is when we saw the Warthog, funny little thing that runs in stops and starts while looking around to see if he is being followed. We got back to Hippo Hollow and crashed for a while, we went to dinner, while we were eating a Hippo came out of the river to eat the grass, then a couple smaller Hippos came along. There are a couple of guys that there sole job appears to be sitting and watching for them to come up, at night time you are not supposed to walk on the lawn due to the danger posed from the Hippos, out of all the accidents involving animals the Hippo has the statistic for the highest death rate, to look at they appear to be a big blob on legs when out of the water, but they spook easy and therefore charge at what scares them.
We have a sleep in tomorrow, 6 am wake up but we don’t leave until 8am, heading to Swaziland. A couple of the clips here are of the Leopard and another of a Warthog being spotted and backing up. |
